King Mohammed VI places national security among the priorities of relations with Algeria

Despite the failure of previous attempts due to the absence of serious interaction by the Algerian authority, Morocco returns to knocking on the doors of dialogue with the Algerian neighbor, to open a new page in the relations of the two countries, on the basis of mutual trust and constructive dialogue, as a new royal invitation came to endorse Morocco's good intentions towards Algeria.

King Mohammed VI called on Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to "work together, as soon as he sees fit, to develop fraternal relations, which our peoples built through years of common struggle," considering that it is illogical to keep the borders with Algeria closed.

In a speech addressed yesterday evening, Saturday, to the nation, on the occasion of the twenty-second anniversary of the Throne Day, the King added that “what affects the security of Algeria affects the security of Morocco, and vice versa,” stressing that “Morocco and Algeria are more than two neighboring countries, they are complementary twins.”

Morocco has previously submitted several initiatives and calls to Algeria on several occasions to open dialogue and debate on several issues, including the issue of border closures. The initiative that King Mohammed VI presented in his 2018 march speech was an initiative to open a direct and unconditional dialogue, through a joint political committee, that focused on all issues without exception.

Analyst and expert in security and strategic affairs, Muhammad Al-Tayyar, says, “The new royal call to open a dialogue on the border issue comes in international and regional circumstances different from previous years, and it was an explicit call whose content reminds us of the exceptional bonds of brotherhood that unite the two peoples.”

This royal invitation, Al-Tayyar added, “focused on dispelling all manifestations of apprehension and fear adopted to justify the continuation of closing the borders for security reasons,” noting that “closing the borders between Morocco and Algeria misses many opportunities for development and prosperity for the two peoples, as well as the opportunities for recovery and take-off of the border areas between Morocco and Algeria. the two countries.”

The same analyst considered that "this strange issue at the global level constitutes a threat to the national security of both countries, as it reinforces all foreign strategies aimed at maintaining a high degree of tension between them, and aims to brake all development opportunities that would positively reflect on the twin peoples."

The pilot added, in a statement to Hespress, that "the closure of the borders does not only concern the movement of citizens of Algeria and Morocco, but extends to more than that, as it also deprives the citizens of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and others from moving to Morocco, and this matter is strange, immoral and without justifications."

The expert in strategic affairs expressed his hopes that the call of King Mohammed VI would be answered and that we would witness practical measures to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of sitting for dialogue, and to open a new page that will make the region a model in economic prosperity and cooperation in all fields between the two brotherly peoples.

The spokesman concluded his statement that "the current stage in the border areas, with common and diverse risks and threats, will not be enough just to welcome the royal initiative."
