Baghdad-(AFP)-Supporters of the popular crowd held a stand-in Sunday evening at Baghdad Airport, and candlelit candles were lit on the second anniversary of the assassination of the former commander of the Iranian Jerusalem Legion, Kasim Soleimani, and the deputy head of the popular crowd, Abu Mahdi Al-Mohandes, with an American strike near the airport.
Engineer Soleimani, the former commander of the Jerusalem Corps, who is responsible for external operations in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and one of the most prominent architects of the regional policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, died in an attack carried out by a United States piloted aircraft shortly after their departure from Baghdad airport on 3 January 2020.
The burned-out hull was placed at the site, which was carrying the two men.
Supporters of the crowd, a pro-Iranian alliance of sects now in the state, gathered Sunday at the same site, including men, women and children, and waved candles around the car's hull.
Hundreds carried pictures of the engineer, Sulaymani, and the crowd flags, as reported by a photographer for France Press, while religious hymns were read on the occasion. She also attended the daughters of Soleimani and the engineer.
The pause came after thousands of supporters of the popular rally staged a demonstration in central Baghdad on Saturday, the second anniversary of the assassination. During the demonstration, leaders in the crowd repeated their demand for the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country.
Tehran responded days after Soleimani's assassination with missile strikes on Ein al-Asad base in western Iraq, where American soldiers are deployed.
The era of former American President Donald Trump saw an escalation of tension between the two arch enemies, the United States and the Islamic Republic.
Since then, the demands of Iran and the Shiite factions loyal to it in Iraq have continued as a complete withdrawal of the foreign forces deployed in the country within the framework of the international coalition against the Islamic State organization.
